Abstract

Current Mapuche art is characterized by mixing practices of artistic production and knowledge of both Mapuche ancestral culture and Western culture. In this sense, the current Mapuche art becomes a conflicting field where their own elements and categories and the foreign ones move, signify, and resignify, in search of defining an identity; thus, the work opens both towards the recovery of their own traditions - through the cultural tradition revival process - and the separation from the foreign ones- through the cultural resistance process. In this dynamics, the mythical ancestral narration ranks as one of the cross-cultural artistic elements where the cultural difference is reasserted and, at the same time, as an important vehicle for the traditional aesthetic bases. From this point of view, this paper seeks to know how the ongoing Mapuche artistic and literary process resignifies the mythical narration and, in this process, whether it transforms some of the aesthetic bases inscribed on it or does not.
